Good Afternoon Parents!
Hope everyone is adjusting well to the temperature changes and staying warm. Happy Diwali to those who celebrated it :) This week was another busy one! We started each morning with a NCTM problem or a TED puzzle. It was definitely a challenge to understand the rich math vocabulary. Some words to review are: every other, sum, odd, even, pattern, quarter, dime, nickel, etc. Please encourage students to review some of these terms. We have also dove a bit deeper into the computation of multiplication. We have learned a strategy in assisting us in solving difficult equations. Below is a link to review this strategy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUvOyz2Ysq0&t=8s With Vermicomposting, we have also gathered a few more observations about how the worms are breaking down our organic snacks. We discovered that they are avoiding the seeds or organic wastes with harder skins. We noticed that they are growing larger and are predicting that they may reproduce and have eggs soon. We will be going back and forth into Miss Paddon's room to check up on our decomposing buddies. We started looking more deeply at research. We made up a checklist in guiding us when we are browsing the web for information. We decided these are some important things to have on our checklist: -make a list of what you want to find out -choose the best research tool for doing the research (books, internet, educational clip, etc.) -search for the answer for your question -decide what information is important and what isn't -take jot notes and summarize information We will be using this checklist in keeping us in check for our future research :) As for Caine's Arcade, we started with some empathizing. We put ourselves in the shoes of what it feels like to be a gamer designer as well as a gamer. We shared ideas with partner and classmates about what each group's needs are. We defined our problem and are currently working on our blueprints for our arcade game design. We have also started writing a business proposal letter to ensure this task becomes an action! On Friday, we were lucky enough to learn more about Sphero! Sphero is our classroom robot. We are learning to control and handle him/her (we haven't quite decided on a name yet...). As for future endeavours with our dear robot, we hope to learn the basics of coding and to set up an obstacle course for our Sphero to travel through! Just a reminder that a Halloween Safety Assembly will happen at 1:30pm on October 31st, 2017. Students are welcome to bring their costumes to slip on in the afternoon. Please ensure their costumes are appropriate and no weapons or masks are allowed. Parents are welcome to come attend if they would like. Happy Friday!

Good Afternoon Parent(s),
Happy Friday! Here is a summary of our unique week! Tuesday - After our Fall Break, we had to revisit establishing good routines. We examined how Sleep Deprivation affects our thinking and our brain. We watched a TED talk and what preventative measures we can take. We learned that we should be establishing an appropriate sleeping schedule having at least 8-10 hours of sleep per night. We also started looking at research. Students looked at a factious website around a made up creature called the Tree Octopus. We discovered the importance of differentiating between factual information versus opinion based information. We also looked at valid sources versus unreliable sources. We will continue to practice doing effective research throughout the year. Wednesday - Caine's Arcade! Students discovered how one child's curiosity and imagination impacted a positive change. We had a class discussion around our purpose and what we can do to make an impactful change in our community. Students have decided to create arcade games for an Arcade Night to raise awareness/money for homeless people before winter comes. Thursday - Vermicomposting - composting with red wiggler worms. Students have learned the process of composting and how these worms decompose organic waste. We will be looking at various other ways of composting and how to take care of our new classroom pets :) Friday - STEAM Fridays! Students were given the opportunity to choose an interest of theirs. Some chose Coding, others selected Building Towers and various other choices. Please ask students about this amazing experience! Picture Day is this upcoming (October 23rd) Monday. Please send your child in their fancy dresses or dapper outfits. Photo samples will be sent home when it's ready. Halloween will be celebrated with a Halloween Safety Assembly. Constable Johnson will be coming in to remind students in how to Trick-O-Treat safely! Students are welcome to bring their costumes to school on Halloween, (Tuesday October 31st) and will get dressed in them in the afternoon. Please remind students to dress appropriately as weapons, masks and glorified representations are not allowed. Book Orders were due this past Friday. An order will be placed this weekend. New November Book Orders will be sent out next week. Remembrance Day Choir forms were also sent home today. Please ask your child if he/she has chosen to partake in this activity. If yes, please return the form signed. If no, please ignore! Enjoy your weekend :) |
