What an amazing week we have had in Room 16! Students had a wonderful experience at the Glenbow Museum and enjoyed learning how to use photos and artifacts to create their own unique exhibits! All students had the opportunity to display and share their exhibits as they officially became "curators". We also spent time looking closely at various fossils and learning how to carefully sketch, label and document our findings.
Students had a multiplication quiz this week focusing on problem solving skills and basic multiplication facts. Grade 5 students are expected to be able to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication questions. Grade 4 students are expected to be able to solve 2-digit or 3-digit by 1 digit multiplication questions. We will continue to review multiplication and division next week. We have been reviewing the function or plants, in particular, roots, stems, leaves and flowers this week. Grade 4 students have conducted research and collected data in the form of jot notes. We will continue to explore plant life and growth into next week. Our Grade 5 students have been exploring Chemistry and conducted research on Matter, Solutions, Chemical Reactions and Acids and Bases. Stay tuned for more of our learning next week! This week, we compared and contrasted pictographs and petroglyphs and the significance of these symbols to the First Nations people. We learned how symbols were used to tell stories and will create our own unique symbol to represent ourselves! We will focus on the question "What story will we leave behind and how do we want to be remembered?" to guide our learning. I am excited to see what "stories" students will create and the long lasting symbols they wish to be remembered by. We are continuing to learn how to independently edit our written work. Ask your child how we use the COPS strategy C (Capilization) O (Overall appearance) P (Punctuation) S (Spelling) to help us edit and revise our writing. A big congratulations to both Riley and Suhayla for completing 100 home reading entries in their journals! Remember to read, write and learn something new every day! Important reminders and updates: 1) Report Cards go home on Monday Jan. 29. Please sign and return all report envelopes back to school with your child as soon as you can. Thank you. 2) Field study forms and payment for the National Music Centre are due on Wednesday Jan. 31. We are still in need of a few more parents to join us on this day. Please contact me as soon as possible if you have valid CBE clearance and would like to join us on Thursday Feb 1. Thank you in advance. 3) Please read and write a quick response to your child's letter this week in their home journals 4) All students should be reading and writing every day for at least 20 minutes. Home reading is due at the end of each week. Have a great weekend everyone!

Please remember to check the blog regularly for class and school information, updates and reminders.
Science: We took part in a chemistry experiment yesterday involving Mentos candy and a can of Coke (soda). We used the scientific method to guide our planning and did not get the results that we expecting. Students were given time to reflect on what happened, ask questions and shared their observations. We also discussed what a variable is and how scientists often change a variable and conduct experiments many times before they see desired results. We will attempt to change one variable and conduct the experiment again next week. Stay tuned for our results! Social Studies: Students focused on mapping skills this week! We used atlases and Google maps to explore various maps and the information maps can give us. We will continue to look at natural regions and our land (Grade 5's will focus more closely on Canada and Grade 4's will focus on Alberta). Next steps will be to connect our research with our study of First Nations people and their culture. Math: We continued our work with fractions this week. Students have been focusing on equivalent fractions (the same as) and are finding how useful it is to know our multiples to help us with equivalent fractions! We also looked at some common symbols (=, <, >) and how to correctly read, write and apply these symbols to our mathematical understanding. Please remember to practice your multiplication facts everyday! Writing: Students did paragraph practice this week! We learned what a paragraph consists of and how important it is to organize our ideas so that our ideas are clear and make sense. We will continue to work on paragraph practice and will review punctuation practice next week! Updates: 1) Field study forms and payment for Glenbow Museum are due on Tuesday January 23, 2018. We now have enough parent volunteers for our trip--thank you to the parents who signed up! 2) Students all wrote letters home in their home journals. Please read the letters and write a quick response back to your child! 3) Upcoming field study to the National Music Centre on February 1, 2018. We are in need of 3 parent volunteers with valid CBE security clearance. Please contact me if you would like to join us on this day. Thank you in advance! 4) January book orders and payment due on Monday Jan. 22, 2018. Have a wonderful weekend everyone! 1) Glenbow Museum field study forms and payment are due on Tuesday Jan. 23, 2018. We are still in need of a few parent volunteers to join us. 2) Students who wish to use the Learn Alberta website at home may do at: www.learnalberta.ca. The site is a great resource for both teachers and students and I encourage all students to check it out. The website may prompt you to enter in some info: Username LA06 Password 4105 3) Movement Education (Gymnastics) forms went home today. Please take a close look at the days our class will be participating. It was so wonderful to see all the Grade 4 and 5 students back to school today, eager and ready to learn! I trust that everyone had a safe, relaxing winter break spending time with family and loved ones.
Our class will be heading to another field study next Wednesday January 24, 2018 to the Glenbow Museum. I am in need of 3 adult volunteers with CBE clearance who would like to join us on this day. Please email me as soon as possible if you are able to make it. Students will be going home with field study forms tomorrow with more information. Please remember to send your child to school with appropriate clothing as weather in our city can be very unpredictable! It is always best to dress in layers and bundle up while outside (mittens, scarves, toques, winter boots, are all a must). Blue days (where supervision is indoors only occurs when the temperature reach -20 degrees wind assisted or not). Please remember all students need to have a pair of indoor shoes while at school. Water bottles are recommended and students should take these home once a week for a good clean! |
