Our Grade 4's have been super busy this week! We started our plant research and spent some time in the Learning Commons collecting information and data from credible online websites and books. Then we took a close look at our data to determine what type of plant would be best to grow in the classroom, and how would we be able to keep the plant alive during the winter? These conversations and questions led to our Greenhouse Project. Students will work in small groups to plan, design and build a greenhouse. We are just at the beginning stages of planning now, and students are all very eager to start building! I am so excited to see what our final projects will look like! Students have been asked to think about what types of materials would work best for a greenhouse. Any old unused materials at home would be appreciated for this project. Some examples of materials are: newspaper, tinfoil, cardboard, plastic containers, tin cans, glass jars, wood, adhesive materials, etc. A letter will be going home next week detailing more information about types of materials.
Students will be going home with a Community Walk Field Study form today. Our class will be going to Valley View Park on August 31 from 11:46 - 2:30pm. We are in need of adult volunteers who have valid CBE security clearance. Please contact me asap if you can join us on this day. *Please note - if parents have not volunteered in your child's school before, you will need to visit the school office to complete the volunteer forms for this school year. Without the help of adult volunteers, our field studies and off-site learning experiences would not be possible! Thank you in advance! We started home journal today! At the end of every week, your child will write a letter home to you or a family member detailing all of their learning for that week. Please read your child's letter and write a response back to him/her. Your child will then return the home journal back to school on Monday. Students were so eager to write letters home today! Also, this is an excellent way for both you and your child to keep ongoing home and school communication lines open. Ask your child what coding is! We started to discuss code and will continue to learn about coding and its importance now in present day and into the future. I am happy to hear that some students have done some coding before--we might be able to learn some new tips from them! Have a wonderful weekend everyone! I was born in High River, Alberta but have lived in Calgary for most of my life. Currently, I live just outside of Calgary with my husband, young son and two dogs. I have had the pleasure of teaching at various schools throughout the city of Calgary. I have taught different grades, ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 4. In my 12 years of teaching, I have learned so much from my students and their families. My teaching journey has been full of wonderful experiences and I am eager to continue on this journey this school year! I believe that regular, ongoing communication between home and school is of utmost importance. That being said, the best way to reach me is through email at: [email protected]. I look forward to working with all of you this school year!
Mrs. Darlene Kear What a wonderful first week of school we have had getting to know each other in Grade 4! I am so excited to be able to take part in your child's learning this year! Please check the blog regularly for updates and news regarding upcoming field studies, special events and general school news. You can also reach me at (403) 777-8250 or through email at [email protected] for any other questions. We spent some time this week familiarizing ourselves with our new school (we took a school tour and had a school wide assembly introducing all staff and teachers). All students at Valley View School have a purpose: We also spent some time discussing the 3 C Rules in our classroom (I will show Caring for myself, Caring for others and Caring for my environment) and how important it is to always show caring, kindness and respect to all members of our school. Students were introduced to STEAM challenges (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) and participated in a Marshmallow Challenge, Pipe Cleaner challenge, Crossword Name challenge and Create an Animal challenge. I enjoyed watching students as they worked together to plan, design and build. We will continue to take part in many more fun STEAM challenges throughout the school year. Grade 4's explored the question, "What is a scientist?" and had an in-depth discussion about science and the role scientists play in our world. We learned that their are many different fields of science and how some differ from one another. Scientists ask good questions and explore the world around them. Scientist make observations, record and analyze their results/data. Scientists build and construct new things. Scientists use their background knowledge and other tools to help solve problems. Scientists are not afraid to take risks in their learning. In the end, we came to the conclusion that we are all scientists! I am eager to get this school year started as we have some big plans in store for Grade 4! Thank you for a fantastic first week of school and see you all on Monday! Mrs. Kear |
