Updates from this week: Students had a wonderful time yesterday at Ralph Klein Park, despite the cold! We learned so much about weather, climate and how to predict, collect and record data such as wind speed, wind direction, barometric pressure and more! We also learned that Ralph Klein Park is the largest man-made wetland in all of Canada! Ask your child to share some of their learnings with you! Ralph Klein Park is open, free to the public so I encourage you all to visit again (maybe in the Spring/Summer when its warmer outside). For more information, click here: www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Parks/Pages/Locations/SE-parks/Ralph-Klein-Park.aspx Winter Break is quickly approaching! If students (or parents) wish to do some homework over the break, here are some great ideas/websites to try: - LearnAlberta website: www.learnalberta.ca (username is LA06, password 4105) - this is a great site for all subject areas - The Mathematics Shed (www.themathematicshed.com) - The Literacy Shed (www.theliteracyshed.com) - Tumblebooks (http://www.tumblebooklibrary.com/Home.aspx?categoryID=13) - Scratch (great site for coding and all students should have a free Scratch account) : www.scratch.mit.edu - Studyjams (Math and Science): www.studyjams.com - National Geographic Kids (https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/) Have a wonderful holiday season with family, friends and loved ones! See you all back to school on Monday January 15, 2018!

What an amazing week we had in Room 16! Our Arcade Game Grand Opening was a huge success! Students were so excited and proud to share their games with their parents, students and other teachers/staff members. A Big Thank you to all parents and family members who attended our Grand Opening on Tuesday! Students will be finishing up the writing component (business plans and reflections) early next week.
Thank you to all the parents and family members who attended our Div II Winter Concert! Kudos to all the students--you guys did a great job and should all be proud of your hard efforts! We now have enough parent volunteers for our field study to Ralph Klein Park on Tuesday. Please remember to bring a few healthy snacks, lunch and water bottle for Tuesday. Parents-- a list of all field studies have been posted earlier on this site--please review this list and let me know if you are available to join us for our many upcoming field studies in the new year! Your child will be taking home a math problem on Tuesday this week. This is a chance for you to see how your child has achieved on this particular problem. Please remember that this task is not a reflection of how your child is doing in Math as a whole, rather it is simply a snapshot of their work on this particular task. Our focus will be to lead students to higher mathematical understanding and strengthen problem solving skills. Wednesday December 20 will be our last day of school! Please note school resumes on Monday January 15, 2018. Have a great weekend everyone! What an incredible week full of designing, building and construction! Here is a quick recap of our learning in Room 16!
Inquiry project: Students have put forth great effort into their Arcade games this week. Most groups are almost finished building their games and our next steps will be to test our games and make any edits/changes before our Grand Opening! Students are working on completing their business plans, which will include their blueprints, purpose of their games, step by step instructions and more! Our Grand Opening will take place on Tuesday Dec. 12 in the Learning Commons from 1-2pm. We are hoping all parents and family members can join us and test your luck playing some cool games! Math: Our main focus this week was understanding decimals and how they are related to fractions. We used base ten blocks as a visual to represent decimals as parts of a whole number. Then we learned how to correctly add and subtract decimals. Students made the connection with money and decimals--which is an excellent real-world example of how we use decimals in our everyday world! Stay tuned for a Math activity that students will take home to represent their learning and understanding of decimals next week! Div II Winter Concert will take place on Wednesday Dec. 13 in our school gym from 6-7pm. We hope all parents and family members will join us on this day. *Please note- lyrics to our class songs have been posted earlier on the blog if students wish to practice the songs at home. A big thank you to all our parents who donated non-perishable food items to the Food Bank! Please remember our field study forms and payment for Ralph Klein Park are due Friday Dec. 15. The final day of school for students is Wednesday, December 20th. This will be a full day for students -- teachers will be in the following 2 days for professional development days before the winter break! We are due to return to back to school on Monday January 15th, 2018! Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Grade 4/5's have been working hard on their songs for our Winter Concert! Our Winter Concert for Div II will take place on Wednesday Dec. 13 from 6-7pm in our school gym. We look forward to seeing all parents and family members attend!
Below are the lyrics to our 3 songs in case students would like to practice at home: Here Comes the Snow Here comes the snow, It’s fallin’ down. It’s falling gently upon the ground. Here comes the snow. It’s fallin’ down. It leaves a blanket upon the ground, ground ground. Peacefully the flakes of white Are falling down on us tonight Stay in by the fireside Or bundle up and go outside. Down the road upon a sleigh, Just having fun this winter day. Down a hill upon a sled Then snuggle in a winter bed. Snow Verse 1 I'm looking out my window and I see a lot of gray Looks like Verse 1 I'm looking out my window and I see a lot of gray Looks like its gonna be another wintery day. Grab my coat grab my hat check my app Guess there's gonna be some snow, And it's coming all the way 1st Chorus It looks like snow. I see the snow. Here comes the snow. Just let it snow. 2x 2nd Chorus Just let it snow, snow, snow, snow snow, snow, snow, snow Verse 2 The Charlie Brown flakes are falling slowly from the sky.
